3 Simple Steps For Implementing a Policy Change

Implementing a policy change can be a monumental task. It can take an entire workforce weeks or months, depending on the size and complexity of the policy. Or something small, like changing a smoking area, can be as simple as a mindset adjustment. With any change large or small, there are three simple (but effective steps) to implementing a policy change in the workplace:

  1. Plan. Plan the most effective and efficient method to obtain the results you want. Then examine likely alternative scenarios using a SWOT analysis. Plan for push-backs, shortcomings, and missed deadlines. Have a backup plan for your backup plan. Just when you think you have a fully comprehensive plan, go through it all over again from a different perspective. Run your plan by multiple people and consider outside opinions. Also, consider the opinions of the employees whom the policy change will impact most. It is impossible to please everyone and change does not always go over well, but when employees know that their opinions matter, they are more likely to have a positive attitude. The more thoroughly you plan, the more likely your next steps will run flawlessly.
  2. Execute.  Even the with a well thought out plan, there is bound to be some speed bumps. When you are executing a policy change, you should have near constant communication and information sharing with your team about what’s working, what isn’t, what’s unclear, and what needs revision. It is important to follow through with your plan and not back down at the first sight of opposition. But also remember to remain flexible and patient during this time. There are always unforeseen occurrences and you should know when it is time to go back to the drawing board. Don’t force something that just isn’t working. How you handle the implementation of a policy change will say a lot about your leadership skills.
  3. Evaluation. This is the feedback stage, where intelligence and information is gathered and assimilated. This affords insight into other means of implementation for future projects, and allows you the opportunity to analyze. This post-action evaluation also becomes the catalyst for future planning. This may be the most important step in the sense that you can learn for the experience and improve in the future. This is another opportunity to listen to other perspectives on went wrong and what went right. Policy changes impact everyone differently.
