Oil and Gas Job Recruitment Becoming More Difficult

In the present economy, roughly half of students who graduate with a Bachelor’s degree cannot find jobs. While employment hasn’t fully recovered in the last few years, the oil and gas sector of energy remains on the opposite end of the spectrum. Rather than facing a hard fight for employment, there won’t be enough professionals to fill future shortages.

STEM graduates (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) have significantly decreased, while other fields of study have considerably increased, leaving the energy sector out of balance. By 2030, engineering companies predict they will begin facing alternative measures to fulfill jobs, include cross training from other technical and engineering skills. To add to this problem, almost half of employees in this field will be retiring as the “baby boomers” advance in years.

Considering the lucrative salaries the energy sector can offer, it comes as a surprise that the workforce demand is increasing. Countries consume more energy each year, and even with environmentally friendly alternatives increasing, the oil and gas sector has shown no signs of decreasing. Over 50% of oil and gas companies are expecting to hire more workers this year and over the next ten years as well. This is no small feat considering the large but limited talent pool.

Oil and gas technology has evolved very rapidly and requires a special technical expertise. In an age where many companies require increasingly more talent, projects like deep-water drilling and complex reserve scenarios need proper human capital to remain productive. Shale oil is also in very high demand.
