"Setting a HIRE standard...that's the Dunhill difference."

Project management is a unique niche, and requires a very particular skillset and training. It’s a very broad field, but the systematic approach applies to the vast majority of jobs – including those without the title “Project Manager.”

Project management requires years of experience and education, but there are things that even an experienced professional could improve. Here are 3 tips for effective project management.

  1. Plan for a buffer.
When setting deadlines for your projects, make sure you build in extra time for any delays. This allows a little extra room for your employees to finish their tasks correctly if you end up waiting longer than expected for information or materials from external sources. Creating a timeline with several smaller deadlines during the process can also help you gauge if you will need extra resources in order to complete the project on time.
  2. Continuously refine.
Kaizen is the Japanese methodology of small, gradual changes. Continuously examining systems and operations with fresh eyes toward improvement can speed up a project’s deadline and increase the level of performance. This is not just for Project Managers, however, but for every member of the team. Regardless of what part a worker plays, he/she may be able to find a more efficient method. It is imperative for project managers and other leadership to solicit and impartially evaluate potential changes.
  3. Plan for contingencies.
Plan for accidents. Plan for the unknown. Plan for a number of variables. Project management often relies on a large number of smaller pieces and tasks that end up being part of a whole. Thus, there are a number of things outside of the PM’s control. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. Many project managers plan everything flawlessly, but leave little or no room for error.

Project management is an exceptionally important skill; albeit one that requires a considerable amount of discipline and planning. Often, it’s the project managers who implement strategic leadership and effective management, and knowing these three tips will help you at any level.
