“I Accept!” Making Sure Top Talent Accepts Your Offer

Managers enjoy hiring the right candidate just as much as the candidate enjoys the offer. Introducing a new member to a team is exciting. Your company benefits, your team benefits, and you benefit.

While finding the right talent is a unique skill of its own accord, convincing a candidate that you’re the best place for the next step in their career is a different task altogether. Many employers seem to forget that the interview is a two-way street. While some younger candidates will say whatever it takes to land their next engineering job, seasoned veterans understand their options more practically, and should be interviewing you just as much as you are interviewing them. These are the people you really want to get an enthusiastic “Yes!” from. Here’s how:

  • Be candid about their responsibilities. A candidate will appreciate your frankness much more than promises you may not be able to keep. If your engineering expectations are unusual, telling them upfront will not only ensure a low turnover rate, but will boost your reputation for future prospects.
  • Create a culture that attracts top talent. Compensation is a very persuasive, however, there are a significant amount of variables that go into the decision to enter company’s workforce beyond the dollar. Culture is named as either the primary or secondary reason 74 percent of engineers leave their place of work for another job. Create a culture that people want to work in, and compensation can take a back seat.
  • Sell them on how your offer benefits them. By the time you’ve made an offer, you probably know enough about the candidate to understand why they’re considering the opportunity at your firm. Is it the compensation? Culture? Personal benefits? Highlighting how your company can fit their needs may provide a gentle nudge in the right direction.
  • Remain competitive. It’s imperative to have a full candidate funnel. While this may not necessarily ensure a “yes,” if a candidate knows that they are the only person who is being screened past the first round, they will have the upper hand. Consider interviewing several alternate candidates. Not only will this increase the likelihood that you will get a “yes,” it creates demand for the position.
