Regardless of where you are in your engineering career, you should always have goals. These career goals serve as a roadmap from where you are now to where you want to be. Here are a few steps to make your engineering career goals a reality:

  1. Clarity. Goals need to be clearly defined. Career goals are just like going on a road trip. Before you leave you must decide where you are going, plot a route to get you there, and make sure you have enough air in your tires. You will get to your destination much faster this way. Make a clear path for your career goals as well. Know what you want and how to get there.
  2. Accountability. Unless you own the company you work for, you probably report to a boss who has expectations for you. Meeting their expectations is important, but how many people have their own? Having career goals allows you to hold yourself accountable. Those who are self-accountable generally perform better.
  3. Vision. This is similar, but not identical, to clarity. Having career goals affords you a vision of your career and where you want to be. Use this vision to determine what the interim steps are to make you successful. Without vision, however, you will consistently lack focus and clarity.
  4. Motivation. Motivation provides the mental fuel to perform, and is the catalyst for getting things done. It is an essential ingredient, and one that highly successful people often cite as the reason for their success. Having clear career goals provides the motivation and helps you remember why you’re working late when everyone else is gone, or why you chose a specific niche.
  5. Success. Success does not come easy. However, there is an incredibly satisfying feeling when accomplishing a specific goal set from the month or year before. This is tangible evidence that you’re becoming successful, and have achieved whatever goal it is you have in mind. Success is, in short, accomplishing what you set out to do.

All of these tie into an overarching theme of accomplishment.  Having a vision and clarifying a goal will allow you to hold yourself accountable, provide motivation to accomplish it, and yield the final success you’ve set out to achieve.
