Are We Facing a New Industrial Revolution?

According to a recent study sponsored by Merrill Lynch, the United States economy will get a boost of around one billion dollars a day by the end of the year, thanks to developments in the oil and gas industries. These contributions will make up 2.2 percent of total Gross Domestic Product for the US, which is quite a solid chunk for an economy valued at $15 trillion. The development of Hastelloy and other alloy mining as well as the shale fields across the country, as well as increased investment in the Gulf of Mexico, are helping to usher in a new industrial revolution.

“A Guy With a Joystick” is Changing the World

Researches from Dickinson State University in North Dakota recently spent time in the Bakken oil fields to see just how drilling is impacting local and state economies. Researcher Clay Jenkinson notes in his findings:

Today, a guy with a joystick can direct steel well pipe 12,000 feet into the earth, and then TURN a 90 degree corner (with stiff steel pipe), so that, with the same joystick, he can feel his way to a 3-15 foot vein of oil bearing shale thousands of feet away from the turn. Think about this for a moment. We can send down a straw more than two miles into the earth, through some very dense and unyielding formations, and then turn a corner and wander laterally until we reach an exceedingly narrow formation that the entire population of North Dakota could never reach with shovels if they did nothing else for the rest of their lives.

As technology in the industry continues to develop at a breakneck pace, Jenkinson believes that oil and gas are about more than just unlocking resources beneath the earth. He takes it several steps further, declaring that the industry is helping to usher in a new industrial revolution.

The Dickinson State team believes that when oil companies work hand-in-hand with the states in which they operate to help protect the land, water, and air; and when they respect the local communities in which they work, oil and gas can create, “a model of enlightened twenty-first century development.”

Staffing the Revolution

As oil and gas continue to boom, staffing has become a concern for many companies in the industry. In order to carefully balance technological advancement with the desires of local communities who want to benefit from oil and gas without impacting the environment, teams will have to be made up of highly-skilled engineers. This need for engineers has created a job-seekers’ market. Talent can demand high salaries and top-shelf benefits because they know their skills are in demand. Competition for the best and the brightest engineers is tough, and oil and gas companies must differentiate themselves in order to attract and retain high-quality candidates.
