Interviewing Tips – Part 4 – Give a straight answer

You’re now into the nitty gritty of the interview. You’ve asked some good questions about the company and told them how you skills can help them achieve their goals. Remember, at this stage, it’s about them not you. So now it’s the interviewer’s turn. He asks you a question, perhaps one with an answer that might be embarrassing or shine a poor light on you. What to do? Let me digress. My grandfather who dropped out of school in the 8th grade had a way with words that belied his lack of formal education. He had little stories he could tell about situations that I called “Grandpa isms”. They still make me chuckle. One of his favorite sayings if he suspected a fib was to simply say “he was careless with the truth”. Sometimes the truth can be harsh but somehow always bubbles to the surface. So give a straight answer, truth be damned, and move on. How you say things can be just a powerful as what you say so think ahead of the interview how you’d answer a question you’d prefer not be asked. Just remember: The Truth Never Changes.
