The World Green Building Council (WGBC) has appointed a new chairperson. Bruce Kerswill of South Africa will head up the organization, the world’s largest international coalition promoting green building practices.
Prior to his election as chair of the WGBC, Kerswill served as the executive chairperson of Green Building Council South Africa. Throughout his tenure at GBCSA, Kerswill championed green building concepts in developing countries, helping to form the Africa Regional Network of Green building councils. He is recognized by his peers as a champion for social and economic change. He recently told Engineering News, “I believe [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][that the WGBC] is one of the most effective organizations in addressing climate change and effecting change on the ground.”
The WGBC is made up of over 100 countries who wish to strengthen green building practices in their home communities. The group provides member councils with strategies, tools, and information they can use to influence green building actions and address environmental issues affecting their local communities and the entire world. Their mission is to increase the green building market profile, helping corporations and communities reduce carbon emissions and decrease dependency on fossil fuels.
Currently, buildings consume around 40 percent of all of the world’s energy. Green buildings reduce that energy consumption by 50 to 70 percent, and can have a massive impact when it comes to lowering greenhouse gas emissions around the world. The WGBC works to build a global community around green buildings, seeking input and collaboration from countries that have experience in green technology, so that they can share that knowledge and expertise with developing nations as well as developed nations who may be late to the green building revolution.
