On January 1, 2020, if you were like me, you rang in the new year with high expectations. Business plans were finalized and ready to execute, the holidays which brought great joy and a hectic pace were behind us, and the economy was booming. Then came Covid-19. Stay at home orders were instituted, businesses closed and millions of people were suddenly furloughed or unemployed. Countless individuals have been sickened or died. It seemed the spread was coming under control but as I write this, once again the numbers are climbing with restrictions on gathering once again being instituted. So here we are approaching the Thanksgiving holiday and some may wonder how can we be thankful.

Well, I couldn’t disagree more. Yes, times are difficult but what follows are what Dunhill’s staff and our customer site employees are thankful for. I’ve heard it said many times that we’ll get through this. Yes we will, in fact we are getting through this.

Usually, we include a recipe in our newsletter. This month’s recipe could be considered food for the brain. Dunhill is proud to sponsor an upcoming economic outlook conference being conducted by a good friend and renowned economist, Steve Slifer.  Steve normally holds his conference in person here in Charleston. Due to Covid, this year’s event is virtual which will allow those outside of Charleston to “attend.”  If you’ve never heard Steve speak, I urge you to sign up for his always entertaining and highly informative talk.  A link to register is included – please keep scrolling.

On behalf of the Dunhill team – Happy Thanksgiving

Why I’m Thankful.

  • I am thankful for my friends and family.
  • I was able to get a wonderful new position.
  • I am very thankful this year for my family’s good health.
  • I am thankful for the start of a holiday season that has been a much anticipated time of year to share kindness and joy and create new memories.
  • An effective vaccination will soon be available.
  • I am thankful for my family. This year has been filled with a lot of hurt and sorrows but moving on the road to recovery.  Thank the Lord for moving us forward.
  • No more political advertisements – except in Georgia!
  • Family, health, friends, paid in full home, job.

What family traditions do you have during the holidays?

  • Gathering together and celebrating the true reason for the season.
  • We enjoy a special dinner on Thanksgiving and Christmas. We limit our gift giving in our family and make donations to those in need instead.
  • Christmas morning mimosas!
  • The family always travel to moms for dinner. She is so happy to see all the grands and potential new family members.
  • Pearl onions smothered in cheese sauce.
  • When I was a child, my sisters and I would run around the house screaming “Santa came, Santa came!”  If we stay together now or as soon as we see each other, even as adults, we still do this on Christmas morning.  I now get to share that special moment with my son also, which makes it even happier to me.
  • Gather with my loved ones cooking what they love.

Steve Slifer Economic Outlook Conference

It is that time of the year again.  My annual Economic Outlook Conference will be coming up on Thursday morning, December 3 (8:00am EST).  It will be a Zoom webinar.  It does not seem like the right time to do a live presentation at the Daniel Island Club.

The good news is that some of  you who are not physically located in the Charleston, S.C. area may be able to join us this year for the first time.

There is plenty to talk about, and a wide range of very divergent views.  I will provide you with my thoughts on all this and then, at the end, you can decide if that makes any sense.
