During the onset of the pandemic, companies slowed down hiring and even let go of some of their employees. But now that things are slowly going back to normal, hiring has been going up again. One of the industries hiring again is the Information Technology industry. If you’re at an IT company and in charge of hiring, we understand your position. After all, there are so many IT talents applying already. How do you decide which applicant is the right one for your company?

Here are a few general things to look at to help you decide.

The applicant uses a resume that is ATS-friendly.

ATS means “applicant tracking system.” It’s a system that stores all resumes in a database and allows them to be accessed later on, at any time. It also supports a much faster hiring process. And since IT is a fast-paced industry, the applicant should be able to keep up with technological trends. If the applicant doesn’t use one of the many ATS resume templates out there for their resume… Well, let’s just say it’s not a good sign.

The applicant shows particular knowledge and skill in IT.

Obviously, an IT position is one that requires very specialized knowledge. So when you go through the applicant’s resume, it should contain the relevant experience your company needs. If you know precisely what your company needs, try asking probing questions. Even better, give the applicant a test to see how knowledgeable they are. Perhaps ask someone in charge of your IT division to help you screen applicants. After all, the person in charge knows the right person the division needs.

The applicant is a team player.

IT is not a one-person show. The applicant should demonstrate a willingness to work with other people. And not only that, but the applicant should also be able to take criticism and adjust as needed. Ask for instances where they were able to show a willingness to work with different teams of people. Their stories, whether positive or negative, will tell you a lot.

The applicant knows about your company.

If an applicant is genuinely interested in working for your company, they will have researched before applying. Try asking the applicant about their understanding of the company and find out what they know. If they’re enthusiastic and point out certain details, that means they’re very interested in your business. If they say they have no clue and just applied, it’s time to move on to the next candidate.

The applicant asks questions about the job.

In job interviews, applicants are usually allowed to ask questions. It’s also usually a good sign if they ask plenty of questions. You’d like the person you’re hiring to care about the job they will do and want to learn more. Of course, do notice the topics they ask about and the manner of how they ask. If they inquire more about paid vacation leave and job promotions, they might be toxic for your company.
